Remember watching many old mob movies in which some helpless shopkeeper or other has to pay protection money to a gangster. If he didn’t pay a couple of thugs would promptly come and ruffle up the store, taunt his daughter and threaten him with grievous bodily harm. In some countries, insurance companies seem to have adopted a similar strategy to the mob. |

Consumers are bombarded with messages nurturing fear. They are told that if they do not insure their lives, their cars, household contents, mobile phones, etc. that very many bad things will happen to them. So consumers buy insurance. |

Unlike the parallel of the mob however, when insurance companies take your monthly premiums, you can never be sure whether you will be getting the protection that you are paying for.
